Why are the stringed instruments like guitar provided with a hollow sound box?

The sound box is designed such that the air column inside it has the same natural frequency as the string stretched on it, so that when the strings vibrate, the air column inside the box is forced to vibrate as well. Due to its huge surface area, the sound box causes a big volume of air to vibrate at the same frequency as the string. As a result of the resonance, a loud sound is created.
