When a troop crosses a suspension bridge, the soldiers are asked to break their steps. Why?

While the troops march in formation, all of their individual periodic forces are in phase, causing forced vibrations of a certain frequency to be created in the bridge. If the bridge’s natural frequency is the same as the stairs’, the bridge will shake with a significant amplitude owing to resonance, and the suspension bridge may collapse. As a result, troops are required to break steps when crossing a suspension bridge.
