The quantity of oxygen required by bacteria to breakdown organic materials is known as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The higher the BOD of water, the more contaminated it is. The water with a lower BOD is less contaminated. Drinking water has a BOD of less than 5 ppm, whereas severely contaminated water has a BOD of 17 ppm or more.
