What do you mean by the term local earthing? Explain how it is done.

Solution:

In the house, near the kWh metre, local earthing is done. A hole roughly 2–3 metres deep is dug in the ground for this purpose. In the hole is put a copper rod covered by a hollow insulating pipe. At the bottom end of the copper rod, a thick copper plate with dimensions of 50 cm x 50 cm is soldered and buried inside the earth. To ensure good contact between the plate and the earth, it is surrounded by a mixture of charcoal and salt.

To keep the ground damp, water is put through the pipe on a regular basis. Between the plate and the ground, a conducting layer is formed. The copper rod’s upper end is connected to the kWh meter’s earth connector.
