Study the experimental setup in the figure and then answer the questions that follow.

(a) What phenomenon is being studied by this setup?

(b) Explain the phenomenon mention in (a) above.

(c) What is meant by ‘semipermeable membrane’?

(d) What will you observe in the setup after about half an hour? Give reasons for your answer.

Answers:

(a) Osmosis

(b) The movement of water molecules from their region of higher concentration to their region of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane is called as osmosis.

(c) The membrane that allows water molecules to pass through except the larger molecules of the dissolved salts is known as semi-permeable membrane.

(d) Observing the setting after half an hour, the water molecules will continue to pass from a 10% sucrose solution to a 15% sucrose solution through a semipermeable membrane due to osmosis. This will continue until the concentration of water molecules is the same on both sides of the set.
