Lichens are well-known for their ability to detect air pollution, particularly sulphur dioxide. This is due, in part, to their distinct biology. This assertion is supported by evidence dating back more than a century and based on extensive field and laboratory studies. In general, these studies reinforce each other, but the data for oxidants is not entirely consistent, necessitating additional research.
