Nuclear and cytoplasmic fusion occurs as a result of somatic hybridization, and the resulting product is known as a somatic hybrid. Only cytoplasmic fusion occurs in some situations, which may be followed by the loss of any of the nuclei. As a result, the cell becomes uni-nucleated, and the resulting fusion product is referred to as a hybrid or heteroplastic.
