Find the value of p for the following distribution whose mean is 20.6.

Solution:

Total Ʃfi = 25+p Ʃfi xi = 530+20p

Mean = Ʃfx/Ʃf

20.6 = (530+20p )/(25+p) [Given mean = 20.6]

20.6(25+p) = (530+20p)

515 + 20.6p = 530+20p

20.6p-20p = 530-515

0.6p = 15

p = 15/0.6

p = 25

Hence the value of p is 25.
