Describe the shapes of $\mathrm{BF}_{3}$ and $\mathrm{BH}_{4}^{-}$. Assign the hybridisation of boron in these species
Describe the shapes of $\mathrm{BF}_{3}$ and $\mathrm{BH}_{4}^{-}$. Assign the hybridisation of boron in these species

Solution:

(I) $\mathbf{B} \boldsymbol{F}_{3}$
Boron will in general shape monomeric covalent halides in view of its little size and high electronegativity. These halides of boron generally have a planar three-sided calculation, which can be clarified by the cross-over of three $\mathrm{sp}^{2}$ hybridized orbitals of boron with the sp orbitals of 3 halogen particles. It very well may be noticed that boron is $\mathrm{sp}^{2}$ hybridized in $\mathrm{BF}_{3}$.

(ii) $\mathrm{B} \mathrm{H}_{4}-$
$\mathrm{BH}_{4}$ – has a tetrahedral structure which is represented by the $\mathrm{sp}^{3}$ hybridized orbitals.
