Define enzymes. Briefly describe the mechanism of enzyme catalysis.

Enzymes are large protein molecules with a high molecular mass. When they are dissolved in water, colloidal solutions are created. Living plants and animals manufacture these complex nitrogenous organic molecules. Enzymes are also referred to as “biochemical catalysts.”

Mechanism followed by an enzyme in catalysing a reaction :

On the surface of the enzymes, there are many cavities with distinct shapes. Active groups such as –NH2, COOH, and others can be found in these cavities. The reactant molecules’ complementary shapes fit into the holes like a key fits into a lock. As a result, activated complexes develop. The product is formed when the complex decomposes.

Thus,

Step 1 –

E + S → ES⁺ (Activated complex)

Step 2 –

ES⁺ → E + P
