The Central Board of Secondary Education has released the class 9 mathematics syllabus for 2021-2022.
This article lays out a detailed introduction to the CBSE Maths Class 9 syllabus for this academic year.
The CBSE itself will conduct the testing for class 9.
No annual school examinations will be considered for the final result anymore. This aims to create uniformity of testing and scoring for students across the country.
The testing will be divided into two parts: the above-mentioned annual board examinations and internal assessments.
Details for both modes of testing are mentioned below:
Internal: The Internal Assessment accounts for 20% of a student’s final score. It is broken up into three parts: Periodic Test (10 marks), Notebook Submission (5 marks), and Subject Enrichment Activity (5 marks). A student is required to get 33% marks in total to pass.
Final Examination: The final examination is of 80 marks and requires students to score a minimum of 33% to pass.
Theory Syllabus of Class 9 CBSE Maths
The topics that will be tested in the first term examinations (2021-2022) as per the updated CBSE Maths class 9 syllabus 2021 are as follows:
S. No. | Topic | Marks |
1 | Number Systems | 08 |
2 | Algebra | 05 |
3 | Coordinate Geometry | 04 |
4 | Mensuration | 04 |
5 | Statistics and Probability | 06 |
6 | Geometry | 13 |
Total | 40 |
The topics that will be tested in the second term examinations (2021-2022) as per the updated CBSE Maths class 9 syllabus 2021 are as follows:
S. No. | Topic | Marks |
1 | Algebra (contd) | 12 |
2 | Mensuration (contd) | 09 |
3 | Statistics and Probability (contd) | 04 |
4 | Geometry (contd) | 15 |
Total | 40 |
As we can see from the syllabus for the first term and the weightage of each topic, Number Systems, Geometry, Algebra and Mensuration are the most critical for learning at the commencement of Class 9 and are being given the utmost priority. Other topics have been given a fair share of learning and will be continued to be taught in Class 10.
The topics that will be internally tested in the first term (2021-2022) as per the updated CBSE Maths class 9 syllabus 2021 are as follows:
Topic | Marks |
Periodic Tests | 3 |
Multiple Assessments | 2 |
Portfolio | 2 |
Student Enrichment Activities (Practical) | 3 |
Total | 10 |
Total Marks: The total marks for the first term would be 10 (Internals) + 40 (Examinations) for each term.
[Term 1 (40 marks for the exam + 10 marks for the internal assessment) + Term 2 (40 marks for the exam + 10 marks for the internal evaluation)]

Class 9 Maths Deleted Syllabus (2021-2022)
The CBSE board has reduced the syllabus for Class 9 mathematics students by 30%. The topics that are not being covered in the class 9 maths syllabus anymore are as follows:
Chapter | Topic Removed |
Real Numbers (Number Systems) | Representation of non-terminal/terminal, recurring decimals on the number line |
Explanation of why all real numbers are represented by unique points on the number line as well as conversely
Definition of the nth root of real numbers
Polynomials (Algebra) | Motivating and stating the Remainder Theorem with its examples |
Statement as well as proof of the Factor Theorem
x3+y3+z3-3xyz | |
Linear Equations in Two Variables (Algebra) | Examples and questions on Ratio-Proportion |
Introduction To Euclid’s Geometry (Geometry) | Complete chapter removed |
Triangles (Geometry) | Proof of theorem removed |
Triangle inequalities and the relation between “angle & facing side” inequalities in triangles
Area (Geometry) | Complete chapter removed |
Circles (Geometry) | Concept of there being only a single circle passing through three non-linear points that are given |
Concept of if a linear segment that joins two points subtends an angle at two points lying on the very same side of that line having the segment, then they lie on the circle
Area (Mensuration) | Finding the area of quadrilaterals using Heron’s Formula |
Statistics | Histograms |
Frequency polygons | |
Mean, mode and median of ungrouped data |
Although these topics have been deleted in Class 9, the CBSE Board has fleshed the syllabus to be incorporated in mathematical learning in the coming year (Class 10) and at an advanced level in Classes 11 and 12. Despite having been cut off, parts of most of these topics’ chapters are being taught during the year, which will make it easy for the student to take on the deleted ones in the future.
Frequently Asked Questions of CBSE Class 9 Maths
- Is there a possibility of the removed topics being tested in any of the semesters?
No. CBSE will not test the removed topics in either of the semesters. They will only be following the updated syllabi.
- Can individual schools change the syllabus?
No, individual schools that come under the CBSE board will only be following the board’s syllabus.
- Can schools add additional testing assessments in the internal assessments?
While schools may take additional assessments to test students, only the ones mentioned by CBSE will be accounted for in their final marks. Please refer to the marking scheme broken down in the tables above.
- Is there any prerequisite for a student looking to take mathematics in Class 9?
Mathematics is a compulsory subject for CBSE students in class 9. Therefore, there are no particular prerequisites a student must fulfill to take the course. All students are required to study the subject in Classes 9 and 10.
- Will a student’s learning outcome be diminished because a small portion of the syllabus has been canceled?
While a small portion of the syllabus has been deleted for the current class 9 students, a majority of it remains the same. The parts that have been removed will be incorporated into their learning shortly and will not diminish their knowledge or understanding of the subject in Class 9.
