A woman starts from her home at 9.00 am, walks at a speed of 5 km/h on a straight road up to her office 2.5 km away, stays at the office up to 5.00 pm, and returns home by auto with a speed of 25 km/h. Choose suitable scales and plot the x-t graph of her motion.

Answer –

According to the question, distance up to the woman’s office is 2.5 km

And woman’s walking speed is 5 km/h
Therefore by using the distance-time relation, we can find the time taken by woman to reach her office while walking = (2.5/5 ) h

=(1/2) h

Thus, time taken = 30 minutes

And it is given that the speed of auto is 25 km/h

Similarly using the distance-time relation, we can find the time taken by woman to reach her office in auto = 2.5/25

= (1/10) h

= 6 minutes

In the graph, the origin of distance and time is taken as O, then

at  t = 9.00 am, x = 0 and

at t = 9.30 am, x = 2.5 km

The segment of the x-t graph that shows her walk from home to work is designated as OA. AB denotes her working hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. BC is the representation of her return voyage.
