How important are First Year marks for pursuing engineering?

Spread the love

Are you planning to apply to an engineering college? You will be required to take an entry test as well as outstanding first year marks to qualify for admission. Of course, your second year marks are equally important, but if you get low marks in the first year, it is likely that you won’t be able to fill that gap in the second year.

First year marks are also important because they give you a certain boost to continue your hard work. Students who fail to get their desired first year marks usually need a massive amount of effort to get through the second year and to eventually get into an engineering university.

In this article, let’s take a look at the importance of FSc marks that will eventually lead you to an engineering college.

Total marks of FSc

FSc first year total marks are 550.

FSc second year total marks are 500.

Total marks of FSc pre-engineering are 1100 (Part-I and Part-II).

1st year passing marks

1st year passing marks are 33% in compulsory subjects (33% in theory and 33% in practical).

FSc subjects combinations

FSc pre engineering subjects include physics, chemistry, and math. The compulsory subjects are English, Urdu, Islamiyat, and Pakistan studies.

Students who take physics, chemistry, and computers are also eligible for some engineering fields, such as computer engineering.

Students who take physics, chemistry, and biology (pre-medical subjects) are eligible for biomedical engineering.

While you are investing your time and effort in FSc, it is important to not underestimate the challenges of FSc pre engineering subjects, because you are only one step away from choosing professional education.

How to get the best result in FSc exams?

Getting a good percentage on FSc first year total marks is the key to getting good marks in the second year, leading to an admission in an engineering college. Therefore, it is very important to study FSc subjects with keen interest, planning, and focus. Let’s take a look at these tips in detail:

How to develop interest in studies?

You can develop interest in studies by learning how to motivate yourself. You can do that by following simple steps:

  • Get yourself a notebook and write down your daily goals. At the end of the day, review your daily goals, achieved or unachieved. Also keep a healthy habit of writing the goals and dreams of your life that you think will bring you success and happiness.
  • Once you have written this down, it is time to figure our way around the problem areas you probably wish to change.

How to plan for your studies?

Plan for your studies by:

  • Making productive schedules
  • Noticing your own progress everyday
  • Taking proper notes in classes
  • Not missing classes, homework, and assignments
  • Organizing your study space
  • Learning techniques to study smart and not burn out
  • Prioritizing your studies
  • Making portions of your work for memorization, understanding, and testing
  • Revising, revising, revising!

How to improve your focus?

All the inventors, discoverers, chess grandmasters, top athletes, and scientists share one quality: an ability to go deep into a concept. But how do we start?

The best way to increase your focus in studies is to keep a steady interest in the subject itself. If chemistry inspires you, it will definitely catch your attention. Same for the other subjects as well.

Therefore, the idea is to understand concepts and try to develop a liking for the subject. Once you like a subject, start understanding the fundamentals and concepts. After that, just go deep into the subject matter, research beyond textbooks, and spend hours enjoying it.

Other helpful tips to improve your focus are:

  • Restful sleep
  • Healthy eating habits
  • Exercise and an overall positive attitude

Why study pre-engineering?

Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design, research, and invent processes that are used in a wide range of industries including automobiles, oil and gas, construction and more. Engineering is one of the specialities that have always been present alongside human development. It is still considered to be an ever evolving field.

Engineering has many specializations and you can get a chance to choose a field that interests you the most. If you want to make a decision whether you want to continue studying engineering or not, read ahead to find out the benefits of engineering:

Job availability in Pakistan

High salary

Engineering is definitely a well-paid profession. In Pakistan, the base salary is at least Rs. 45,000 for most of the fields.

International job market

Engineers from Pakistan are easily inducted into multinational companies with a worldwide presence. Engineers are generally needed in every industry and are also an integral part of Industry 4.0 vision.

Contribute to the future

Engineers have an excellent chance to be the visionaries behind our future. Renewable technologies and computer innovations are at the center of future developments. Engineers can contribute to the processes to create a better world.

Mistakes to avoid when applying for engineering degrees

Students plan the process of admission in engineering colleges without a clear understanding of their career goals, type of admission tests, syllabus and dates, and marking and weightage. These mistakes can easily ruin a student’s chance at joining a career of choice.

Here is a list of tips to follow:

#1 Learn about universities and admission tests

Universities Test names Test conducted by
KCU, QAU, FAST and over 30 universities  NTS NTS
NUST NET/SAT NUST
UET, COMSATS, CECOS and others  ECAT UET
PIEAS PIEAS test PIEAS
GIKI GIKI test/SAT II  GIKI/College Board
PAF Aeronautical PAF entry test PAF
LUMS LCAT/SAT I LUMS/College Board

#2 Join a test preparation academy when needed

Admission tests are conducted after FSc exams, however, some students join academies to prepare for admission tests even before that. As a result, they are unable to focus on either.

Entry test syllabus is different from FSc syllabus for some tests and test pattern is always different. Our recommendation is to avoid over preparation and focus on the content of FSc first.  Once you have mastered the concepts, it will help you in the entry test as well. Join a focused and experienced academy afterwards.

If you are taking SAT I or SAT II (which can be registered for and taken any time because it is conducted by College Board, USA), timing and planning SATs will be different from other tests.

#3 Explore universities

Not all students are privileged to have a school counselor or academic advisors. Therefore, students tend to pick any college randomly without figuring out the differences between programs, but you don’t have to self-limit your choices.

Therefore, students are encouraged to thoroughly explore the websites of universities, visit any campuses if they like, and write or talk to the admission advisor at the universities.

Some of the top engineering colleges in Pakistan are:

#4 Explore scholarships and financial aid options

Sometimes students don’t want to apply to good programs thinking that it must be out of our reach. However, this is simply a mistake of not exploring the funding options.

If a program appeals to you at a university but is expensive to look at, you still can get in! It is just a matter of finding out the right financial aid programs at a university.

Also, students who come from small towns and villages are hesitant to apply to bigger universities or even higher education.

This can easily change with a clear understanding that Pakistan isn’t just a handful of big cities and you can very well be a part of any university if you want to. Don’t underestimate yourself because good universities all around the world would willingly give you admission if you are capable and hardworking. You just need to know your options and dream big!

#5 Stay away from distractions during FSc

Majority of students fail in their entry tests because they haven’t been paying enough attention to studies. One common and prominent feature of high achievers is their ability to block out distractions, such as ringing phones, beeping notifications, emails, and everything on social media for the duration of studying.

The only practical solution is to put a stop to distractions before you start studying. Studying for long hours is not hard. It just requires your determination to stay away from distractions, which may also include binge eating.

#6 Solve past papers with timing

Students need to attempt the past papers using real timing. Many students just skim through the papers and don’t actually solve them. Shortcuts or mental solving won’t work because you need to imitate a real pressure situation with timing yourself.

#7 Check learning options online

Not everyone has access to world class academies that lead to engineering colleges. Therefore, many students are lost while looking for reliable academies and advice. Students also tend to waste time looking for resources such as guides and notes. The solution is not in guides, notes, and shortcuts, rather it lies in your hard work.
